Highly Cited Researcher in 2020. In the same year, he was named among of the “20 Most Influential Professors in Smart Manufacturing” by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). Dr. Xu is now on the Board of Directors of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME (NAMRI/SME) and serves as the Chair of the NAMRI Scientific Committee.

报告内容摘要:In the last decade, the global landscape of manufacturing has been significantly reshaped by the advent of Industry 4.0—an influential initiative originating from Germany. This transformative concept has spurred the development and widespread adoption of cutting-edge technologies.

At the tenth anniversary of Industry 4.0's inception, a new paradigm emerges with the unveiling of Industry 5.0, a concept championing a shift from a solely technology-centric approach to one deeply rooted in value-driven principles. The simultaneous coexistence of these two Industrial Revolutions triggers an array of inquiries, necessitating earnest discussions and elucidations.

In this context, there exists the dynamic influence wielded by the rapid advancements in IT and AI tools upon the landscape of manufacturing automation. Do these advancements, in fact, steer the trajectory of automation onto an altered evolutionary course? As industries embrace a heightened sense of social responsibility, a crucial inquiry arises regarding the future trajectory of manufacturing enterprises. Will manufacturing plants eventually become “lights-out” factories? To what extent are these manufacturing enterprises purely commercial, and conversely, to what degree do they serve as social agents of welfare?

This talk aims to take you through an exploration of these dimensions, and to unravel the intricate interplay of technological progress, societal accountability, and the intricate identity of manufacturing entities.
