Program Outline of Civil Engineering

1. Program Objective

This program is designed to cultivate students with all-round development and mastering the basic knowledge and theory of civil engineering discipline. Except for basic engineer training, the students should have good professional ethic, high degree of social responsibility, sound theoretical basis, extensive knowledge and strong practical skills and innovative capacity. The students are expected to become senior manager who satisfy the requirements for the future developments in relevant industry and regions. 

Graduates can be engaged in technical, research and development and /or management works in civil engineering industry, such as surveying, design, construction, management, education, investment, development and project consultation. After practices and/or further education for about 5 years, graduates can be served as project leaders or technical experts in construction industry as well as the related fields.

2. Graduation Requirements

The international students are required to obey the law and regulations of China and respect for the customs of Chinese people. They are also expected to deeply understand the politics, economy, culture, history and society of China, and to participate in and promote the exchange and cooperation between China and their own countries. The students should be educated to grasp the basic theory and knowledge of mechanics and civil engineering, and be trained as engineers who have the capabilities of performing engineering design, construction, management and scientific research.

Graduates are expected to have the following knowledge and abilities:

2.1. Master the basic theory and knowledge of civil engineering

 2.1.1. Basic knowledge of mathematics and natural science;

 2.1.2. Basic theories of engineering economics and project management;

 2.1.3. Basic knowledge of mechanics and civil engineering;

 2.1.4. Professional knowledge of civil engineering.

2.2. Master the design principle of systems, structures, components (nodes) or construction schemes that meet the specific needs of civil engineering.

 2.2.1. Understand the structure composition, force and deformation characteristics and failure mode of various structural systems;

 2.2.2. Grasp the design principle of components (nodes) and common engineering structures and the related software application technology;

 2.2.3. Be equipped with the general construction technology; and the methods of processing, organizing, management and technical and economic analysis for civil engineering projects.

2.3. Be able to consider the impact of the solution of civil engineering projects and complex engineering problems on society, health, safety, law and culture, in according to relevant knowledge, standards and requirement in civil engineering industry. have the ability to evaluate the design, construction and operation of civil engineering projects and the solution of complex engineering problems.

    2.3.1. Be capable of analyzing and evaluating civil engineering practice and the solution of complex problems, base on the relevant knowledge in civil engineering;

2.3.2. Understand the impact of civil engineering projects on society, health, safety, law and culture as well as the responsibilities of a civil engineer.

2.4. Be familiar with guideline, policy and regulations of the politics, economics and the society. Obey the law and regulations of China and respect for the customs of Chinese people. Participate in and promote the exchange and cooperation between China and their countries.

2.5. Understand the future research and development trend of new technology, new materials, new processes and new equipment in civil engineering.

2.6. Have good logical thinking, and scientific research and working abilities.

4. Core Curriculums

Specialized core course: Engineering Mechanics, Structural Mechanics I, Civil Engineering Materials, Engineering Loading and Design Principle of Reliability, Soil Mechanics and Foundations Engineering, Design Principle of Concrete Structures, Design Principle of Steel Structures, Civil Engineering Construction.

Engineering Mechanics (1617709050): 80 hours, 5 credits. This course is basic theoretical course. Focusing on statics of rigid bodies and analysis of deformation and failure of bars, this course can provide necessary basic theory and analysis and calculation principle to study the movement and force analysis of objectives and design economic and safe components. Through the study of this course, the students should master force and equilibrium analysis of objectives, analysis and calculation of internal force, stress and deformation of bars. They are also expected to have a clear conception of mechanical properties of materials, strength analysis, stiffness calculation and stiffness checking.   

Structure Mechanics I (2804589050): 80 hours, 5 credits. This course is basic theoretical course. Through the study of this course, the students can further grasp the basic principle and method to analyze and calculate the force and displacement characteristics of structure systems, master the general method dealing with mechanical problems and have the ability in structural analysis and calculation, on the basis of learning Engineering Mechanics.

Civil Engineering Materials (4015004030): 48 hours, 3 credits. This course is a specialized basic course. This course is mainly designed to provide basic theoretical knowledge of building materials for Structural Design and Construction, etc., as well as lay a solid foundation in material selection, quality acceptance, quality appraisal, material test, storage and transportation, corrosion prevention and test research when the students are engaged in professional and technical work.

Engineering Loading and Design Principle of Reliability (4019011015): 24 hours, 1.5 credits. This course is a specialized basic course, aiming to make the students grasp the classification, calculation principle and statistical method of engineering loading, understand the design method of structures subjected to various loading and lay a solid foundation for the students to further learn related specialized courses and carry out structural design.   

Soil Mechanics and Foundations Engineering (1617501040): 64 hours, 4 credits. It is a compulsory basic theory course for civil engineering professional. It makes the students master the basic principle of soil mechanics as the core of the foundation strength and deformation, master the design principles and methods of the foundation, cultivate students the ability of solving the general foundation engineering problems and lay the foundation for the further study and application more complex and more advanced knowledge.

Design Principle of Concrete Structures (1617502040): 64 hours, 4 credits. This course is a compulsory specialized basic course. Closely integrated with engineering practice, this course is designed to impart the basic theory and knowledge of reinforced concrete structure to the students, and guide them analyze and solve the design and calculation of reinforced concrete components in practical engineering by using the learned knowledge flexibly.

Design Principle of Steel Structures (4018001035): 56 hours, 3.5 credits. This course is a compulsory specialized basic course, aiming to introduce the basic theory and design method of steel structures to the students. Through the study of this course, the students should grasp the characteristics, basic design principle and method of steel structures, have the ability in designing basic components of steel structure and their connections, and in turn lay a solid foundation in designing and researching of steel structural systems.  

Civil Engineering Construction (1617505035): 56 hours, 3.5 credits. This course is a compulsory specialized course. This course is focusing on the general regulations of construction technology, organization, theory and practice in civil engineering. According to comprehensive usage of construction technology and organization principle of various types of work, this course is also designed to make the students to learn the principle of construction design and organization and have the ability in compiling construction design for various civil engineering projects. Through the study of this course, the students are also expected to have the ability to solve the technical problems of construction.

5. Major Link of Practice Teaching

Civil Engineering Cognition Practice, Engineering Surveying Practice, Practice of Engineering Geology, Productive Fieldwork, In-class Experiment (on Computer), Project Design, Graduation Design (Thesis), etc.

6. Graduation Requirements

Meet the requirements of graduation and College Student Physical Health Standard. Complete the course content of this program. The total credits are no less than 140.

7. Degree

Students meeting the requirements for degree awarding will be awarded the Bachelors degree of Engineering.
